ABSRACT

Sri Mulyani: The Portrayal of Russian Revolution and its impacts toward Russian society in George Orwell’s Animal Farm

The purpose of the writer in writing this thesis is to know how the characters of Animal in Animal Farm represent the Revolutionary figures in Russia, how the Revolution transforms the system and ideology of Russia and what the impacts of the Revolution toward Russian people.

The division of class has become the root of problem in this novel, where the low class breakthrough the domination of the upper class who exploits them. This action is committed after they find the new concept of society which is regarded as an ideal type. Because of this, they make rebellion which give impact to the change of their pattern of thought which is reflected in their socio cultural life. The whole story really represents the historical event happened in Russia.

The writer used sociocultural and sociohistorical approaches to support descriptive analysis. These approaches are used to see the correlation between the historical event in Russia with the story in the novel, also to see the influences of the ideas toward society in the social changes which give impacts to their socio cultural life. The writer also uses the theory of Marxism and Marx Weber to see its application in the story which has relation with the real fact in Russia.

Finally the writer finds Animal Farm novel shows that the Animal character and characterization is the representation of the figures that exist outside the text that is Russian Revolutionary figures. Besides, this novel also portrays the transformation system and ideology in Russia and revolution impact toward Russian society.

Sri Mulyani: The Portrayal of Russian Revolution and its Impacts toward Russian Society in George Orwell’s Animal Farm

Tujuan penulis dalam menulis skripsi ini adalah untuk mengetahui bahwa karakter-karakter di novel Animal Farm adalah simbol dari tokoh-tokoh revolusi di Russia, transformasi sistem dan ideologi Rusia dan juga untuk mengetahui bagaimana dampak revolusi itu terhadap masyarakat Rusia.

Perbedaaan kelas menjadi akar permasalahan dalam novel ini. Dimana suatu masyarakat yang kelas bawah mendobrak dominasi kelas atas yang telah mengeksploitasi mereka. Tindakan ini dilakukan setelah mereka menemukan konsep baru dalam masyarakat yang di anggap nya ideal. Karena itulah mereka melakukan revolusi yang kemudian berdampak pada perubahan pola fikir mereka yang di refleksikan dalam kehidupan sosial dan budaya mereka. Semua cerita ini sangat mewakili peristiwa bersejarah yang terjadi di rusia .

Penulis menggunakan pendekatan sosial budaya dan sosial sejarah untuk mendukung analisa deskriptip dalam novel ini. Pendekatan-pendekatan ini di gunakan untuk melihat hubungan antara peristiwa sejarah di Russia dengan cerita yang ada di novel Animal Farm. Juga untuk melihat pengaruh pemikiran terhadap masyarakat dalam perubahan sosial yang memberikan dampak terhadap kehidupan sosial dan kultural mereka. Penulis juga menggunakan teori Marxisme dan teori Marx Weber untuk melihat penerapan teori-teori ini dalam cerita novel yang mempunyai hubungan dengan fakta yang sebenarnya di Rusia.

Akhirnya penulis menemukan bahwa tokoh dan penokohan dalam novel Animal Farm adalah representasi dari tokoh yang ada di luar text yaitu tokoh-tokoh revolusi Russia. Di samping itu novel ini juga menggambarkan transformasi sistem dan ideologi di Rusia dan dampak revolusi Rusia terhadap masyarakat Rusia.
